Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) lives and works in Madrid with her husband Paco along with their own daughter, Paula. Raimunda's sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), lives nearby. Both sisters miss their mommy, Irene (Carmen Maura), who died several years ago in a house fire along with their dad. When a former neighbor out of their hometown accounts that she has seen the phantom of Irene, the brothers don't believe her. After a murder and a family disaster Irene's soul churns around her daughters.
