Clovis Poplin and crooks Lou Jean lose their baby to their state of Texas and resolve to do anything is necessary to get him back. Lou Jean gets Clovis out of jail, along with shooting a highway patrolman hostage, and their son is stolen by the 2 from his foster home. As a large dragnet starts to pursue them the couple become folk heroes that are improbable and begin to bond with an Police Man.
