Richard Hannay, a mine engineer on holiday in London, finds the socialite life boring. But a covert operative comes into his room and hands him a coded notepad about the approaching commencement of WWI. The Roman numerals code, which Hannay feels he must personally crack, has him pursued by both German and British operatives.
