Thirty-nine-year old divorcé Louise Harrington (Linney) works in the admissions office in Columbia University School of the Arts. She's unnerved if she receives an application by F. Scott Feinstadt, the identical name of her high school sweetheart who had been killed in an auto accident, also requires for the student to arrange a meeting. His appearance, mannerisms, and painting style closely resemble those of the love, and she begins to suspect the artist could possibly be the reincarnation of her old fire. Hours later meeting, the two embark upon an event. Also complicating Louise's life have been her partnership with her ex-husband Peter, who admits he is learning to cope with a gender addiction which, unknown to her, and plagued their union. Her ne'er-do-well brother Sammy, who is favored by their mother Ellie despite his short comings. And her friend Missy, who uttered the initial Scott before his departure out of Louise also seems intent on doing exactly the same with the version.
