Alice and David Chaplin, as well as their children, relocate to a gated luxury housing development where social standing is paramount. The snooty standard is set by Queen Bee Ffion, who addresses her daughter in French even in stores, and Alice is worried by the parents' race to get their children into the prestigious Chelsea college rather than the lowly local comprehensive school. To be near to the action, Sarah McDonald takes a job as a school secretary. Molly, Alice's daughter, is no academic, getting a meager 38% on her mock run entry exam for Chelsea. Alice becomes concerned that her daughter would be forced into prostitution and resolves to imitate Molly and take the exam herself.
