Twenty years following Third Impact, Shinji Ikari awakens. He's not dated. Much of Earth is laid in ruins, NERV has been dismantled, and those who he once protected have turned against him. Shinji continues the struggle against the angels also understands the fighting is far from over, even when it could be against his former allies. The characters' struggles continue amidst the battles against the angels and also each other, from what might be the end of earth, spiraling down.
